Where to find the fish in New Zealand
West Bastion Reef is a great spot to paddle out to on your kayak. Cut bait works best here with some burley but soft bait has also seen good results.
The spot beside Horn Rock produces some very good Snapper especially during the spring months. It’s a perfect place to use slow jigs while drifting.
If you’re looking for Kahawai then the Te Whau Point is a must-visit spot. You may get the odd Kingfish here too..
Just out from Moturoa Island this spot is great for big snapper. Catch some live bait on the way and put them out because kingfish are here too.
Sadler Point is a great area for catching kingfish as there’s always a lot of bait fish running past. Good pan size snapper are often caught here too.
Kauri Point is well known for its pan size snapper and is an awesome spot to check out if you want to do a quick trip after work.
Located on the north side of the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, you will find a small sheltered sandy bay called Army Bay.

Use a long reach surfcasting rig squid or similar tough bait and cast into the holes on the edge of the channel.
Spearfishing here can be quite tricky but very rewarding. Average depth is 12m and bottoms out at around 25m. Great for Kings and Boarfish.
